Rendering of Proposed iFLY Facility
Last Updated:

Project Approval

Despite initially facing concerns from the locals, the team behind the iFLY New Zealand project revised their plans and has gained approval by a resource consent commissioner. This approval allows for the construction of a $15 million facility to be built on upper Brecon St near the Skyline gondola.

The project needed additional consideration because it doubles the local height restriction at more than 15m tall. The project was given the go-ahead because the height of the building is required in order for the wind tunnel to operate. Local concern over noise was overturned as it was presented with no technical expertise. As we know from visiting similar tunnels, they are in fact silent from the outside.

The iFLY New Zealand Team

The project is a joint effort between Auckland couple Emma & Gary Beyer and SkyVenture. The Beyers are well known names in the formation and New Zealand skydiving communities. This brings a valued set of knowledge and experience to this project. While tourism will likely be the main business of this tunnel, we suspect skydiver training will also be part of the clientele. Emma Beyer is the managing director of iFLY Indoor Skydiving NZ.

Hints from information around the web and the appearance of the building rendering have us guessing that this tunnel will likely be a smaller 12 ft recirculating model similar to several that have just opened - the latest being near downtown Chicago.

Construction & Future

The project is expected to begin construction in 4 months which puts it on-track for an early 2017 opening timeline. As always Indoor Skydiving Source will be following the construction progress and posting regular updates to the iFLY New Zealand profile.
